WORLD CULTURES: FINAL ESSAY QUESTIONS

WORLD CULTURES STUDENTS:

I'm so sorry I haven't been able to post up the final essay questions sooner. Our car got broken into on Friday night and a lot of things got stolen so we've been dealing with that mess for the past few days. Because I've posted these up just today, I am willing to let you hand them in on or before FRIDAY, MAY 20TH. Remember that you are required to use the MLA format for writing this essay. We discussed this in class and I will also be including some internet sources to further detail and explain these specifications. ASSIGNMENTS HANDED IN NOT IN MLA FORMAT WILL HAVE 10 POINTS TAKEN OFF THEIR ASSIGNMENT'S GRADE.

You may be surprised that there are not more discussion questions, but this is due to the fact that these questions are very complex and can be elaborated and analyzed enough to provide for more than your 2 page limit.

Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to write me.

REMEMBER TO CITE YOUR SOURCES USING THE MLA REFERENCE FORMAT AS WELL! Otherwise, you may fail at your final paper because of plagiarism.

Here are the questions:

1) Why do you think the film's title is "Babel"? What does the name refer to and what is it allegorical/metaphorical for? How does the title relate to the events that occur in the film, LITERALLY and SYMBOLICALLY?

2) How does the movie relate to the cultural interactions, stereotypes, and reactions to stereotypes and prejudicial judgments we have discussed all semester? Give examples from the film (scenes, quotes, etc.)

World History Students,

Here is the first short video from the History Channel's documentary "The Dark Ages". As mentioned in class, you will need to watch this video WHILE TAKING DETAILED NOTES in order to complete the assignment you will be given in class on Friday, Jan. 28. All assignments are to be handed in at the end of the class on a loose leaf paper. REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR NAME ON YOUR WORK. These assignments will be considered part of your class work grade.

The objective with these assignments is not only that you learn more about the medieval period in an appealing, visual manner, but also that you learn to take quick, yet detailed notes.

Good luck, and I'll see you soon,
Ms. Dimas

Analyzing Feudal Society Assignment

World History Students,

As you know, you were given an assignment on Friday in which you were to bring to class an explanation of an example (written in your notebooks) taken from a film, story, or fairytale in which the feudal system is present. Think about how the characters of the example you chose fit into the Medieval feudal system, do they belong to the ruling class (kings, queens, princes, princesses, etc.)? Or are they peasants? How is this shown in the story or movie (how can you tell)? If the example takes place in modern times and not the medieval era, how is feudalism represented?

I mentioned a few examples in class such as films pruduced by Disney and countless others. You may write between one to two paragraphs in your notebook for this assignment. On Tuesday, we shall be sharing and comparing the different examples you have brought in during class. Remember, if you have any questions regarding the assignment, please feel free to write me.

I am also including the Feudal Society Pyramid that was on the board on Friday for those of you whom did not get a chance to copy it as well as some additional information resources that I have found to be very useful.

Best of luck to all!

or

Here is the website the second pyramid was taken from, it includes a very succint and easy definition of the feudal system that may be useful if you still have doubts.
